Timberframing
Using local wood, which is Vermont is most often Hemlock, Spruce, or Pine, we collaborate with master timberframers to cut simple frames in a traditional, New England style. A timberframe is a perfect complement for infill bale wall systems, where the timberframe is like the skeleton that holds up the roof and creates structure, and the bales get to do what they do best- make a tight, thick wall that is highly insulative for our cold climate.
Bales can either wrap the frame, so the frame is visible after plastering; or frame can be buried in the bale wall. This is an aesthetic as well as a layout choice that affects the interior square footage and size of the foundation.
Or a frame can simply be sided and not insulated, as in a barn.
